Apple Vs FBI: Latest update on the iPhone Unlock Case
The Apple iPhone unlock case has been under the limelight for several months now. Both Apple and the FBI are expected to appear before the US court on 22nd March for the next hearing. The final verdict is yet to be declared, we don’t know who will emerge as the winner, however, we do have some latest updates regarding the case. Apple has been setting several roadblocks for the FBI and making it harder for them to infiltrate to the iPhone security levels that accounts for the user data.
Government’s perspective
Government states that unlocking the iPhone of the accused doesn’t subject the Apple’s resources to any unnecessary strain Apple claims. They also added that Apple has produced this security concern to thwart the court from ordering them to release the data under consideration. Government also believes that Apple is utilizing this situation to mirror the adopted security measures, which they suspect is just a marketing gimmick.
Apple’s perspective
Apple has been freely commenting on this issue. They stick by one of their perspectives that developing a backdoor operating system can easily pose a threat to user privacy and can even have an adverse affect on public safety. “As one of the reputed technology companies, we are supposed to safeguard the trust that masses have instilled in us in terms of data privacy” reverted Apple in response to the to the marketing gimmick statement made by the government.
As per the reports, the Apple engineers are already planning how to tackle the situation if they were ordered to unlock the iPhone. Some of the engineers are even happy to quit their job rather than subsiding to an order against the security software they have developed over the years.
If the Apple were ordered to develop a backdoor operating system to unlock the iPhone data, it is estimated that the job requires six to ten engineers to work over a month to get this task accomplished. Apple has considered this as the last resort, in case they run out of legal options and even knows which engineers to earmark for the task. However, the time can be a major issue here, states Apple. As the per the Apple work methodology, their development sector is heavily compartmentalized, the hardware and software engineers doesn’t come under a roof unless they are close to releasing a product. Apple expects to follow a similar methodology to craft the operating system for the FBI which can be a thorny task.
Apple has stated that most of the Government’s accusation against their security measures has been an effort to smear their reputation.
